Brightwater Vineyards 2014 Nelson Pinot Noir has just been awarded a Pure Gold Medal at the Bragato Wine Awards in Blenheim this week. This follows on from the Gold Medal the same wine received at the Spiegelau International Wine Competition held in July.
The 2015 wines are all showing very good intensity and concentration of flavour. This concentration is really showing through nicely in the Sauvignon Blancs. The Pinot Noirs also are concentrated with nice ripe berry fruit flavours and great tannin balance. The Pinot Gris is very fruit driven and probably our best of the last few years. But the standout of the vintage will be the Chardonnays.

The season started off hot and early. The weather in November and December were more like our usual for February – hot and dry. Flowering was early and the grass dried to brown. Harvest started early this year and with a rush. It seemed that everything was ripening at the same time. A very busy couple of weeks picking Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Riesling then, by the start of April, just about everything had been picked. Another two weeks and it was all in the tanks. Fermenting nicely.
We’ve just been awarded a gold medal for our 2010 Nelson Sauvignon Blanc at the inaugural Spiegelau International Wine Competition.
This continues our golden record of having received gold medals for Sauvignon Blanc every year for the last six years!
