Nelson Pinot Gris 2009Pale straw yellow colour.
“This pinot gris is richly scented with lychee and floral aromas. The palate is full bodied and has a harmonious concentration of deep pear and lychee, combined with subtle sweetness, leading into a long lemongrass finish.”
The grapes for this wine were picked from first crop pinot gris vines planted at our new Sturkenboom vineyard in Hope. The vines were cropped very lightly to ensure concentration of flavour and body in the wine. We were very diligent in removing leaves from around the bunches by hand thinning out any slow to ripen bunches in order to intensify the pinot gris flavours in the remaining berries.
On 14th April ripe clean bunches were picked by hand. Hand picking allows us to achieve a highly aromatic pinot gris.
The grapes were whole bunch pressed, rather than destemmed and pressed, to avoid any bitter flavours coming through to the wine. The juice was handled gently and reductively in the winery and underwent a cool fermentation in stainless steel leaving a balanced residual sugar of 20gm/l.
